About Derrick Luksch
CDT and Owner of O’Brien Dental Lab
Derrick Luksch began apprenticing with his father, Karl Luksch, master technician and owner of Precision Dental Lab in Sacramento, California, at the age of 12. His father trained him in all primary specialties with an emphasis on precision attachments and dental ceramics. Derrick was also privileged to learn from leading dental industry members, including Dr. Peter K. Tomas, Dr. Charles Stewart, and Dr. Jack Hockel. Moving from technician through the ranks to General Manager, he finally purchased the lab in 1978.
Throughout the next decade, Derrick started several auxiliary companies and expanded his knowledge of CAD/CAM systems, industrial machining, computer programming, and software development. Eventually, he sold Precision to devote his energies to creating new systems and processes for the dental lab industry. Then, in 1996, Derrick accepted an offer from longtime friend Mike O’Brien to become co-owner and General Manager of O’Brien Dental Lab in Corvallis, Oregon. In 2002, he became the sole owner of the lab.
With over 55 years of experience, Derrick’s current focus is on research, innovation, and his new passion, teaching. He shares his depth of knowledge and expertise with dental students at the Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU), where he is an affiliate faculty member. He also frequently lectures to study clubs, dental society meetings and supports the continuing education opportunities offered by the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry and the Richard V. Tucker groups.
Sustaining a legacy of progressive technology through research and development, Derrick is the author of five U.S. dental technology patents with another two patents pending. His innovations include CAD/CAM milling processes that are part of O’Brien’s proprietary TruFit® system, and HydroPak®, a revolutionary denture processing system.
